A nutrition facts label is a tool used to promote healthy choices amongst consumers. As a food supplier (and often times a beverage supplier too), you will need to create a nutritional label for your product. There are two ways to create a nutrition label.
The first way is by sending your product to a lab to have your product’s nutrition analyzed. This option will cost a several hundred to a thousand dollars. Some labs may charge you extra for the nutritional label, ingredient list and many suppliers who pay a lab may not receive a complete analysis of key nutrients.
Alternatively, you can use a service like ReciPal to complete your nutritional analysis in compliance with FDA guidelines. Continue reading to learn how to build your own nutritional facts label with ReciPal.
Creating Your Label
When you create your own nutritional label, you will be responsible for organizing all of your ingredients, their amounts, and the nutritional facts for each ingredient.
To collect your ingredients you can either ask your distributor for details or you can use the details (nutrition, ingredients, and allergens) listed on the label.
Once you have your ingredients you will need to determine the nutritional facts per serving. To do this, you need to know the answers to the following items:
- The final weight of your finished recipe
- How many packages* your recipe makes
- How much 1 serving is (FDA link for determining serving size)
- How many servings there are in a package
* An example of “packages” in a recipe is a batch of brownies where you can fill 10 individually packaged units.
Once you’ve entered all the necessary details, ReciPal will calculate the appropriate nutrition values, round them, put them in the FDA format and have you choose a template for your nutrition label. ReciPal offers plenty of customizations, as well as several label styles.
